RIP, Rickey Henderson. Not long after we lost the Hall of Famer, we pulled a Rickey card from a rare 1991 Topps Desert Shield pack.
The Gulf War in 1990 and 1991 took place in two phases: Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The first phase of the war was titled Desert Shield. From August 2nd, 1990, to January 16th, 1991, the US built up forces. The conflict then took place from January 17th, 1991, to February 28th, 1991.
Topps created special Desert Shield baseball cards to send free wax packs to troops in the Middle East. The design of the Desert Shield cads matched the base design that you often see today, but the troops' cads have a gold foil that reads Operation Desert Shield.
RARE CARDS
How are the 1991 Desert Shield packs and cads? The estimated print run of each card is 6,313 sets. With packs shipped to troops in the Middle East, there isn't a true number to tell us how many packs and cards survived. Imagine a pack of cards shipped to a war zone 34 years ago - excellent chance that not many of these packs and cards are available to this day let alone in good condition.
S10 broke a sealed pack of 1991 Topps Desert Shield and pulled HEAT:
Rickey Henerson! We just lost the Hall of Famer in December. Rickey is sliding into a bag, much as he did in his career. The MLB all-time stolen base King was THE menace on the base paths. You can see the Desert Sheild log on the top right. Henderson won the AL MVP award in 1990, and his Oakland A's was off the second of back-to-back World Series appearances. What a card to have from the 1991 season!
Checking the PSA pop report, only 383 of this Henderson card have been graded! Congrats, Justin Price, on taking home this incredible Rickey card for your collection.
